ISLANDS IN THE LAGOON: MURANO AND BURANO

Aboard

boat,

set
out
with
a

guide
who
will
pick
you
up
aboard
the
Michelangelo.
You
will
head
for
the
island
of
Murano
(which
is
one
of
the
largest
islands
in
the
lagoon),
famous
for
its
glasswork
(you
will
attend
a
demonstration
at
one
of
the
largest
glassworks).
You
will
then
move
on
to
the
island
of
Burano,
famous
for
its
lace.
But
Burano
is
also
an
island
of
multicolored
houses
which
form
a
patchwork
of
magnificent
colours.
Legend
has
it
that
the
fisherman
painted
their
houses
in
order
to
be
able
to
recognise
them
in
the
fog

VENICE

Your
guide will pick you up aboard the
Michelangelo. You will set out on
foot for the Doges Palace for a
guided tour. On the Piazzetta, at
the water's edge, lies the opulence
of the Doges Palace, called the
Palazzo Ducale in Italian, which was
the seat of the city's civil power
for several centuries. A masterpiece
of Venetian Gothic, its facade is
arranged in three superposed levels:
a gallery of broken arches, a second
gallery of trilobe arches in which
the bays are half as wide as the
lower ones, and finally a
practically windowless mass in a
mixture of coloured stone.
