IntroductionFeeling overloaded by Rome's epic sightseeing options? Why not leave Rome for the day and take an excursion to Assisi and the Umbrian hill town of Orvieto. Your journey will take you away from modern highways and large cities to discover the real Italy, where ancient villages are just waiting to be discovered. Leaving Rome, you'll travel in a northerly direction and drive along the Tiber Valley to reach the marvelous medieval hilltop town of Orvieto, whose origins go back to Etruscan times. You'll stop here to admire Orvieto's magnificent 14th-century cathedral, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture.
Your tour continues into Tuscany's green hills covered in olive groves and vineyards. This is the land of some of Italy's best known D.O.C. (quality controlled) wines, which include Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.
After a lunch of traditional local dishes, you'll drive along the shores of Lake Trasimeno to arrive in Assisi, built at the foot of Mount Subasio. During a guided stroll through the alleys of this historic town you will see the Church of St Claire, St Francis' birthplace, his childhood home and Town Hall Square with its
People's Palace and Roman temple dedicated to Minerva. You'll also pay a visit to St Francis' Basilica, close to the ancient city walls, with its magnificent frescoes painted between the 12th and 14th centuries.
Leaving Assisi, you will stop at the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli, named after the church where St Francis died in 1226. They thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it highly. They found the trip extremely well-organised. Thank you very much! 2011-12-16 Ethel H , Assisi is now one of our favorite places to visit. It is absolutely beautiful and our guide was able to share the history and interesting stories to give it even more beauty! We enjoyed the trip up to Orvieto and we could have spend more time exploring the village. The pick up and drop off at our hotel was a real bonus, thanks. 2011-12-15 Len , The Assisi guide was excellent. She was passionate about her subject. Most importantly, she was brief and allowed a perfect mix of her talking versus our exploring. 2011-12-13 Robert M , A beautiful and deeply moving tour. Absolutely inspiring. The art and architecture were remarkable. Don't miss the little chapel of St. Francis, inside the larger cathedral! Again, the guide was excellent. 2011-11-26 Mary I , USA It was great , would have liked the tour guide to speak a little louder, to soft spoken to understand while setting in the back of the bus. 2011-11-12 Liz , We love the tour, everything was just perfect!. Thank you
Gabriel 2011-10-31 GABRIEL R , My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our day trip to Orvieto and Assisi. I had done the same tour 5 years previously and had enjoyed it thoroughly and wanted my husband experience it as well. William, our tour guide who was on the first trip I made as well, is a lovely, charming guide and his friendly personality makes the trip more enjoyable. I was pleased to see that there is now some free time in Assisi, which wasn't on the agenda 5 years ago. Also, the farm stop for lunch on Lake Tresameni is delightful place to visit. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there, so much that we plan to rent one of their chalets the next time we visit Italy. I had read negative reviews but don't believe them as this day trip a delightful way to see a small part of Italy.Vicki and Steve, Perth W Australia 2011-10-16 Vicki B , This trip was excellent and brought back many memories from 42 years ago when I came here at age 18. the Guide was excellent as was the lunch. 2011-10-08 Dennis K ,
