Roman baths, houses of patricians,
beautiful mosaics and murals - discover the way the Romans lived from
the ruins of the ancient city of Herculaneum in Italy. A famous
archaeological site, Herculaneum was buried under a river of volcanic
mud when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, which also destroyed Pompeii.
Herculaneum makes for a fascinating study of Roman life with well
preserved ruins like the Suburban Baths, Forum Baths, Argus House and
House of the Deer. Some of these structures have impressive murals,
paintings and floor mosaics depicting scenes from daily life. A tour of
this archaeological site is a memorable journey back in time to see how
the Romans lived in Italy.
Itinerary:
The tour starts from the Piazza Lauro in Sorrento at 0815h (8.15am).
Travel by coach, accompanied by a guide along a beautiful coastal road
through Castellammare di Stabia and join the highway to Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was buried by a river of volcanic mud and destroyed with
Pompeii in 79 AD when Mount Vesuvius erupted. A Roman fishing and port
town, it was rediscovered in 1709. This ancient city has many villas
with well preserved mosaics, and Roman baths with deep pools and
bas-reliefs. A large portion of old Herculaneum is still buried under
the modern town and excavations are being carried out to discover what
treasures lie buried under the rock.
Enjoy a guided tour which will encompass many houses of this ancient
city like Argus House, House of the Deer, House of Mosaic Atrium and
House of Neptune and Amphitrite. The Suburban Baths and Forum Baths are
