From Sorrento,
visit the two cities destroyed by Vesuvius in one day.
Expert guided tours of both Pompeii and Herculaneum
Take a journey back in time to the days of the Romans in the ancient
cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site and draws travellers from across the world each year to explore
its ruins.
Pompeii was buried under lava and ash from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and
lay forgotten for hundreds of years. The well preserved ruins of this
ancient city now offer an insight into Roman history. Frescoes and
mosaics adorn some of the walls of its structures, like the Dionysiac
Frieze and the city has baths, an amphitheatre, Roman temples and
brothels.
The ruins of the residential Roman city of Herculaneum are also
impressive and it has one of the best preserved Roman baths in Europe.
Offering a glimpse into the past, the ruins of the ancient cities of
Pompeii and Herculaneum are a must see in Italy.
Itinerary:
The tour starts from the Piazza Lauro in Sorrento at 0810h (8.10am).
Accompanied by a guide you will travel along a beautiful coastal road
through Castellammare di Stabia and join the highway to Herculaneum.
Herculaneum was buried by a river of volcanic mud in 79 AD when Mount
Vesuvius erupted. A residential Roman fishing and port town, it was
rediscovered in 1709.
Take a guided tour of Herculaneum and see well preserved buildings like
the House of the Argus, which probably belonged to a Roman noble,
judging from its porticoed courtyard and dining area. Continue to the
public baths which are among the best preserved Roman baths in Europe
and see deep pools, stucco friezes and bas reliefs. The House of
Neptune and Amphitrite has a beautiful mosaic as well as a portrait of
the owners of the household.
You will also have free time to walk around this ancient city at
leisure before setting out for Pompeii.
