From Sorrento,
explore the Roman ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii, and learn about
the history of Italy under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius.
Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and draws travellers from
across the world each year to walk along paths trodden by the Romans.
Pompeii was buried under lava and ash from Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and
lay forgotten for hundreds of years. The well preserved ruins of this
ancient city now offer an insight into Roman history. The city has
baths, an amphitheatre, Roman temples and brothels. Frescoes and
mosaics adorn some of the walls of its structures, like theDionysiac
Frieze on the walls of the Villa dei Misteri.
The still active Mount Vesuvius offers a panoramic view of the Bay of
Naples from its summit.
